The Facts:

I was having difficulty finding Public Liability Insurance for a tour company that I worked for. I contacted an underwriter that I knew offered this kind of insurance and they confirmed that they did indeed provide this coverage but that I would need to go through a broker; when i queried them for the name of a broker that they worked with they gave me the name of Macbeth and so I got in contact.

The representative at Macbeth told me that they did not have any underwriters who could provide this kind of cover and that they couldn't help me. When I pointed out that I'd already found the underwriter, confirmed with them that they'd be able to provide coverage and been sent to Macbeth by them because they work together they suddenly said that yes, they could cover us. When the quote came it included broker fees of ~100% of the value of the premium.

We renewed our policy every year for a few years (paying ~100% of the premium in fees each time) until a few months ago when they contacted us to say that the underwriter would no longer be able to provide coverage. They advised me that the market rate would be a 1000% increase (going from a few hundred to a few thousand pounds) if we wished to find alternative cover. I reasoned that they'd be telling the truth and, as we needed the insurance, agreed. They got back to me in less than 24 hours to say that it was impossible to find cover.

I then contacted a different insurance broker who very quickly found cover for a mere 10% of the value suggested by Macbeth.

My Opinion:

- They charged disproportionately large amounts of money for me to do a fair amount of the work for them including finding my own underwriter.

- They were either misinformed or deliberately chose to misrepresent the facts of the market and their underwriting partners.

- They were either unwilling or unable to look for coverage that other brokers found within hours and at 1/10th of the price.

All in all hugely disappointing and I recommend using any other Insurance Broker.

As always, a highly efficient broker that does the shopping around and changing supplier for you in a reliable and safe way. Cost isn't the only factor and this broker knows how to balance competitive prices with reliable and trustworthy insurers. In the unfortunate event you need to make a claim, Macbeth are at your back, negotiating with the insurer, dealing with the paperwork and getting the best payout for you is just part of their service. I would always use a broker and Macbeth is the one I've absolutely trusted for over 40 years.
