Fitzwilliam House at 10 St Mary's Axe is a seven storey over basement building designed by Hamiltons Architects of 10 Lindsey St, London. A medieval church once existed on the site. The building was completed in 1991. Initial tender costs was 19.5m Stg. It has a cast in-situ concrete framed structure & floors. It is clad with fixed portland stone slabs & polished charcoal colour granite bands. Ornate stone clad precast features were specially made to suit spans & heights. On the east facade it is of buff brick finish to upper levels with portland stone and grey granite band at ground floor level. Section of this facade is rendered where the former Baltic Exchange Building once adjoined it until it was destroyed in April 1992. Fitzwilliam House has an elegant main entrance leading to a centrally located lifts adjoining a glazed atrium to the 7th floor. Mechanical plant exists around the flat roof linking to internal service core risers within the building. As more high rise buildings were allowed to be built years later due to a change in government policy which is a excellent use of land space, sometimes l think this elegent building is best suited in another London city location. In 2020 the second floor had a full refit-out and it was leased by NovaLoca with prime rents sought. Credit is due to all contractors and design teams involved.
