I visited New Forrest Ward yesterday, upon arriving at the ward, I rang the bell to request entry, as required. After waiting several minutes with no response, I began to wonder if the bell was faulty. Eventually, I resorted to knocking on the door, and a nurse came to let me in.
When my visit ended, I approached the nurses’ station and politely asked a senior nurse (wearing a navy blue uniform) whether someone needed to let me out. She avoided eye contact and initially ignored me, as though hoping I would go away. When she did respond, it was in an exasperated tone, confirming that I did need assistance to exit. She then returned to her paperwork, making no effort to help.
I walked back to the door but left unable to leave and unable to find another staff member, I eventually returned to the nurses’ station to explain that I would wait until she was available. At this point, she raised her voice, saying she was “very busy” and “needed to do this now,” referring to her paperwork. While I understand the pressures of working on a busy ward, her attitude came across as unhelpful, unnecessarily rude, and dismissive.
Eventually, another staff member arrived and allowed me to exit. By this time, another visitor was also waiting to be let in. This highlights not only a lack of courtesy but also a deeper issue: visitors are entirely dependent on staff to enter and leave the ward, yet there seems to be no clear, reliable system to ensure this happens promptly.
Key concerns:
Professionalism and Courtesy – Visitors should be treated with basic respect. Being ignored and spoken to sharply was uncalled for and unprofessional.
Ward Access Procedures – A clear and consistent system is needed so visitors are not left waiting or relying on already overstretched staff to notice them.
I would like the hospital to review the procedures for managing locked doors and ensure that staff receive appropriate guidance on how to communicate with visitors. A busy ward is challenging enough without adding to the stress by being rude or dismissive. Manners cost nothing and go a long way in maintaining trust and professionalism.

What can I say, I had to take my husband to this hospital whilst on holiday on Sunday evening.
He was taken ill with a pain in his side that worsened very quickly. From the time we arrived at this hospital to the time we left they were absolutely fantastic. Daniel, Louise and Phil in A&E are worth the weight in gold. They believe my husband had a kidney stone and they made him comfortable very quickly. The care they gave him was all from the heart. We had to return this morning for a scan. From the time I parked the car and returned to the car was 45 minutes. He had a scan and was then seen by the doctor all in this time. A massive thanks to all you wonderful caring people.

I have had surgery for a deep impacted wisdom tooth removal, came in as a day patient. I can truly say everything was superb. All of the staff were fantastic, and I was very much looked after the whole time from the minute I booked in, the operation, aftercare unit wards. Until mum lovely wife picked me up in the evening . The hospital itself is superb, and is just down the road from our home. I cannot say enough praise for it all, and all the lovely staff that work there. 😊👍❤️

I am 1 month post breast cancer operation.
After being fast tracked within the government guidelines.
The operation and breast care unit were good.
My surgeon recommended 5 sessions of radiotherapy.
However when I got my appointment with my oncology consultant I was given information about the radiotherapy. I signed the relevant forms and expected to receive my radiotherapy within the 4 to 8 week guidelines.
Then I was given an appointment with a radiotherapy person.
I later found out that because of STAFF shortage they vould not even give me a month of when my treatment would be started and it would be unlikely that I would get it even with the maximum time of 12 weeks
I could not even be transferred to anywhere local.
This has effected by health and wellbeing.
I do not feel I was given duty of care by the planning department. .
Just no staff.

As much as I cant fault the staff that recently cared for my partners mum .
Sadly she had a major stroke ,we are told she wasn't responding however she was as we all saw. Im aware the prognosis wasn't great but knowing that she was end of life I do feel that she should not have been on a main ward .
This was not just distressing for the family on the day she passed but to the other patients and their families seeing this all happening .
They removed antibiotics and all fluids etc and at the end left gasping for breath as she drowned from pneumonia and all this was heard by other patients and families !!! How distressing for them .
I feel this is disgusting as we are in the 21 century not victorian times .
The fact that all fluids and antibiotics were removed and she was given 48hrs to respond or they advise removal of support is in my mind barbaric in this day and age and the sort of practice you expect as a prisoner in the war not a hospital.
And even when she was making slight response they did not put these back in place just leave them to die a cruel death with family watching her drown as her lungs fill and all while the hospital had no respect for her ,her family ,other patients or their loved ones hearing ,watching and seeing her being removed after and seeing family leaving distressed.
This is appalling in this day and age .
If anyone from the hospital wishes a meeting with me id welcome it .
You failed not only this time but a previous time . Shocking

Yesterday I attended Torbay hospital for day surgery . Every member of staff was kind and caring and proffessional. They all put me at ease and I felt totally safe in their care. Every thing was carefully explained to me and my procedure, after care, and discharge ran very smoothly. So many busy staff doing their very best for all their patients. Well done Torbay Hodpital keep up the excellent work for the NHS. Thanks to each and every one of you ,you all made a difference.

Our sister recently passed away but the care and compassion by the Turner Ward that was given to her and our family by all the staff was amazing. Attentive, considerate and compassionate. The hospital was exceptionally clean, accommodating and caring.

Emma, a nurse from the eye surgery unit, oh my gosh was she amazing yesterday, calmed all my nerves and had a laugh with me before my eye operation, don’t think I could’ve done it without her. And dr sleep great job on the eye still obviously painful and at first recovery steps but I’ve had wonky eye my whole life and now it’s already looking forward 😊 eveyone was great team!!
