I am writing to share my experience with Rowland Brothers Funeral Directors in Croydon, UK, regarding the repatriation of my husband’s remains from England to Sri Lanka.

My husband’s family, and I endured an extremely distressing FOUR-WEEK wait for information on when his remains would be released and repatriated. This prolonged uncertainty added to our grief, as we waited to pay our respects and perform the last rites according to Muslim rituals.

This review comes six months after using the services of Rowland Brothers, during which time I was communicating with them remotely from Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, our experience with them was deeply unsatisfactory, marked by poor communication, delays, and a lack of professionalism:

Lack of expertise: From the time they were contracted, the assigned handling officer, Joyce Dumbar, lacked knowledge of the required documentation and procedures necessary for our specific case.

Poor Communication and delays: She did not provide information in a timely manner. I had to follow up daily, only to learn that crucial details had been received by her but not relayed to me. Even after receiving the final documents necessary for repatriation, Joyce failed to notify me promptly, despite multiple calls and messages. I was only informed about requiring an Affidavit when they were in the Embassy, luckily I could act promptly and send the correct document within an hour. However had I not been constantly checking my e-mail and not been able to arrange this, it would have meant a further delay.

Unresponsiveness: She was mostly unavailable, failed to answer calls, and took over 24 hours to respond to emails, causing unnecessary delays as it was only one person handling the case. Given that this is an international service, you would expect more responsiveness for different time zones.

Misinformation about flight bookings: Joyce failed to secure the earliest possible flight for repatriation and misled me via email and phone, claiming that flights were only available over the weekend, when in fact, flights were available on Friday. I personally verified this with the airline and discovered that Joyce had received this information in a timely manner but chose to withhold it. Additionally, Joyce did not work on weekends, and she knew fully well that it would mean an additional two day delay.

No follow-up after departure: Once my husband’s remains were released from the UK, there was no further support or guidance from Rowland Brothers. This led to unexpected complications upon arrival in Sri Lanka, resulting in further delays as my husband's remains being transferred to a local government hospital coroner for an additional autopsy.

While the paperwork was completed correctly and my husbands remains made it to Sri Lanka in very good condition, the overall service, communication, and sensitivity from Rowland Brothers were highly disappointing. Given the emotional distress families face during such times, a higher level of professionalism, responsiveness, and empathy should be expected.

I sincerely hope this feedback helps improve their service, ensuring that future grieving families do not endure the same distressing experience.
