Having been an RAC customer for 10+ years I was appalled at the utter indifference during a recent breakdown and the RAC willingness to leave me and my family stranded. The problem was my new car was not the registered vehicle on the policy something which I had not checked because of the RAC auto renewal. Because of this the RAC said there would be a surcharge and a maximum recovery of 10 miles, I refused to pay the surcharge so they left me and my family stranded 324 miles from home! Never use the RAC if you expect good customer service.

DISAPPOINTING. I rarely leave negative reviews but RAC let me down immensely last night.

I had to wait 7 hours for recovery - after breaking down 5:30pm I called for assistance and wasn’t rescued until 12:30am. I was in a large town just off the motorway so recovery should have been easy.

Each time I called for an update I got a different answer which didn’t help.

I raised a complaint in which their outcome was agreeing that they had let me down, but then just telling me there would be nothing else done about it.

How they can leave people stranded until the middle of the night with no care or accountability is beyond me.

I have RAC Breakdown cover through Dial Direct. Car died 20 mins from home so expected to be low priority and have quite a wait. Recovery (Matt) arrived within 30 mins, diagnosed and performed temporary fix and drove car home for me. All communication was clear and efficient. Also arranged driveway full-fix a couple of days later. RAC Mobile Mechanic Ian has been here nearly three hours this morning, in the pouring rain and all is now working. Absolutely brilliant service, really impressed, highly recommend ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I would give them a ZERO if I can. 2024 New Years Eve I was returning back from Scotland to Leicester and the weather was pretty bad, heavy winds and rain 100%. My car started showing warning signs on the dash and the car started slowing down, drove the car until I got to the nearest services at Kendal Southbound which was at around 4.30pm. Took the RAC cover out and called them out for an emergency breakdown. Charged me £199 for the callout. Assuming either they fix the car or take us home.

Anyway had no choice as I had young kids with me so I paid it as had to get back home.

The RAC Patrol came around 6.45pm and had a look at the car and (THOUGHT) that the turbo has gone. Nothing much was done and no other options available other than towing the car to the nearest garage within the 10 mile radius or quoted me £1500 TO GET THE CAR & PASSENGERS TOWED . Now can someone tell me which garage would be opened at this time on New Yrs Eve to check the car and who in the right fraame of mind would pay £1500 to get the car towed? With not much on the table the guy left. Managed to arrange a breakdown for £500 to get us and the car towed to my home address, which we got home at 5am on New Years Day.

All in all £800 went in the bin and no service provided.

WHAT A GREAT START TO 2025!!!

A COMPLETE WASTE AND A SCAM BUSINESS. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY WITH THEM. ABSOLUTELY USELESS. THEY ARE JUST MAKING MONEY, NO EXPERIENCE OF BREAKDOWN AND NO EMPATHY AT ALL. MY 6 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER FELL ILL BECAUSE OF THEIR POOR SERVICE.

Absolutely disgraceful. Was left stranded at night as they told me my cover had lapsed, which it hadn’t! Had to jump through all sorts of hoops for them to admit they were in the wrong, then they refused to adequately compensate me. When trying to take this further they ghosted me. Will be taking it further as this is totally unacceptable.
Beware!

Broke down at 1pm, they took 3 hours to send a third party recovery which told us they could have been there quicker, what took you so long to organise it? We were then told we would have a courtesy car at the service station when we get dropped there as our car was going to have to be held in storage and unavailable to be towed back, which there was none. Sat at the service station 5 hours completely stranded, everytime we rang you kept going around in circles saying we would get a call for a taxi back home or get provided a courtesy car which we never got a single phonecall for 5 hours. We got offered a taxi 2 hours in the opposite direction for a courtesy car 4 hour drive back home when they could have provided us a 1 and a half hour taxi back home? Something seriously wrong with the management here and it clearly shows by all the other reviews

Extremely Frustrated with RAC Breakdown Service

I’m beyond disappointed with RAC’s service today. This morning, I received a message saying that the towing service would arrive between 8 AM and 12 PM. Around 12 PM, I got another message saying there would be a 2-3 hour delay. I patiently waited, but by 3 PM, they still hadn't arrived, and the repair shop was about to close.

I took a day off work specifically for this, and now I've wasted an entire day of leave. I wasn't able to accomplish anything today because I was stuck waiting all day. This level of service is completely unacceptable.

The water pump went while on a trip and then the #RAC & its contractors came along and destroyed the car. After they left us stranded for around 5hrs, they then lost the car for about 12hrs and found it in Taunton, miles away from where we left it in Bristol. I think someone must of tried to drive the car with no water pump and maybe damaged other parts and fuel was also missing and we had a dead battery that was only fitted a few weeks ago.

Eventually the RAC contractors found the car, brought it back, and while still hitched to the transporter the driver left his handbrake off and the lorry rolled down the hill, this caused a jerk o the from of the old girl and damaged the bumper ect . the lorry then kept rolling and hit a car, damaged a wall etc etc.

Side picture was taken a few months ago, the other two is what the RAC and its contractors did to the car.

I am no longer with the RAC and I recommend you cancel your RAC membership and move to ''Driver Guardian''
